Civil partnerships

To form a civil partnership in a register office or an approved venue in England and Wales, you must give notice.  The notice is a legal statement and can be given up to twelve months in advance.  To give your notice you must of completed a period of residence of at least eight days in the registration district where you live.  The notice must state where the marriage is to take place.  The civil partnership can take place after 15 days have elapsed from the date of which the notice is given.

In the period between the notice of intention to form a civil partnership and the ceremony, anyone with legal grounds for objecting to the partnership can do so.

If you both live in Halton and marry in this district, the necessary authorities for your marriage will be issued to the registrar who is attending your ceremony.  If you marry outside the district of Halton, the authorities will need to be issued to the Superintendent Registrar of the district where your ceremony is to take place.  If you live in another registration district and are planning to marry in Halton, you need to arrange for the authorities to be sent to the Superintendent Registrar here.  If you are not sure on any of the legalities for your civil partnership, please contact the Registration Service on Tel: 0303 333 4300 or email: registeroffice@halton.gov.uk

Fees

The fees for all legal preliminaries and certificates are set nationally.  PDF Icon Registration Service Price List 2012-13  will give you information on pricing.

Forming a civil partnership

You must have resided in the district where you wish to give Notice of the partnership for seven days immediately before giving notice of civil partnership. You will need to make an appointment to see the Superintendent Registrar of that district. In Bolton this can be done by phoning the register office.

Notice can be given by the couple on the same day or on different days. Notice cannot be given on your behalf by your spouse or a friend. Once given each notice of civil partnership is valid for 12 months from the date on which it was given.

Documents the Registrar will need to see:

• A current valid passport (please telephone for advice if current passport is not available);
• Evidence of residence is required;e.g. a recent bank statement or utility bill. Documents issued more than 3 months before the appointment date will normally not be accepted.
• A decree absolute, or death certificate, for those who have been married/civil partnered before.
• Documentary evidence in the form of a Deed Poll, Declaration or some other form of evidence may be required for those who have changed their name, again this can be clarified over the telephone upon making  the appointment
Please note that for all of the above photocopy documents are not acceptable

Civil Partnerships when under 18 years of age

Those under the age of 18 years should contact the register office in advance of their notice regarding consents that may be required.

Civil Partnership Abroad

A Superintendent Registrar may accept notice for a Civil Partnership to take place in a foreign country between a British subject and either a foreign subject or another British subject.

Nowadays there are more choices available to you for your civil partnership venue.
