What should I do if I have concerns?

Absolutely ANYONE can report a concern about abuse or neglect – whether you are a relative, member of the public or work in service setting. If you are worried about an adult who may be at risk of harm or neglect, please call:

What is adult safeguarding?

Adult Safeguarding means protecting a person’s right to live in safety, free from abuse and neglect.  Safeguarding is everyone’s business we must work together to protect adults at risk of harm or those experiencing abuse or neglect.

Spotting signs of abuse or neglect

If you notice any of the following changes, STOP and THINK if they could be signs of abuse:

  • Seems depressed, confused or withdrawn
  • Isolated from friends and family
  • Has unexplained bruises, burns or scars
  • Appears under fed, dehydrated or has unexplained weight loss
  • Over medicated or missing medication
  • Not receiving require care for medical problems or not seeking medical or social care when needed
  • Has bed sores or other preventable conditions
  • Recent changes in banking or spending patterns
  • Has unplanned home or garden “improvements”
  • Appears dirty, unkempt, living in unsanitary conditions

10 Types of Abuse

Physical

Being hit, slapped, kicked, assaulted, shoved, pushed 

Domestic Violence

Abuse which is perpetrated by a partner or family member – this can take the form of physical or psychological abuse 

Sexual

Inappropriate looking/touching, teasing, rape, indecent exposure 

Self-Neglect

Failure by a person to take care of their personal and/or environmental conditions 

Psychological

Controlling, verbal abuse, intimidation, humiliation, blaminh 

Neglect or Acts of Omission

Failure to provide access to appropriate health, care or support services or the withholding of medication, adequate food or heating 

Financial or Material

Scams, theft, coercion in relation to the adult’s financial affairs, the misuse or misappropriation of property/possessions/benefits 

Modern Slavery

Being subject to slavery or human trafficking, forced labour or domestic servitude 

Discriminatory

Being subject to abuse due to race/age/gender/sexuality/disability/religion 

Organisational

Abuse which occurs within a service setting and appears to be widespread across the organisation
